Hairstyles are just like apparel: it’s so hard for anyone to come up with something new. Hence, the best option is to reinvent or be inspired by the previous designs.

This is one of the reasons why retro hairstyles are coming back. They may not exactly look like the hairs of the 1920s or the 1950s, but the cut and the techniques are almost the same. So what kinds of retro hairstyles can you do?

1920s Retro Hairstyles

In the 1920s the women loved to wear the page boy haircut. The hair sported by women was then short, yet they never went beyond the ears’ length. They were also slightly curled inward. However, later on, the style evolved, and the women fell in love with the bob cut—the hair just directly fell on the side of the face and was very short. Perhaps it was a sign that women wanted some sense of equality with men.

1950s Retro Hairdos

This was the time when soap operas were very popular, and mothers would prefer to stay at home to watch the kids and take care of the house. This was also the period where straight hair suddenly became passé, and women wanted the curly hair.

If you have been born during this time, then there’s a good chance that you’re going to spend hours rolling your hair. After all, there’s no such thing as blow dryers back then. In fact, women then would have to sleep with their curlers still intact.

Women also didn’t want any hassle, with so many responsibilities at hand. So those with long hair had to tie them all together in a ponytail using a scarf. As the evening came, they would let their hair down.

1960s Retro Haircuts

The 1960s was a complete turnaround of the previous decade. The Beatles proved to the men that they could also wear their hair long. On the other hand, Jacqueline Kennedy would never be forgotten with her sense of style, including the flipping hair that became a rage.

Then there was Cher. When she came out on TV, the very long and straight hair became in demand once more. So desperate were so many in having such a hairstyle that they were straightening their hairs on the ironing board.

1980s Retro Hair styles

The 1980s can be considered the decade of television programs. Shows such as Knot’s Landing and Miami Vice became instant hits. Bands—from rockers to boy bands—could now be seen on MTV. It didn’t become surprising that men and women imitated what they had just seen.

The popular hairstyle during the 1980s was the very large hair, and there was an implied competition on who could come up with the most flamboyant hair design.

Meanwhile, there were also others who were sporting short hairs, but they were cut asymmetrically.
